“Thank You, Soccer” By Rafael Fernandes de Oliveira
Since I started working with the Soccer & Literacy program at the Final Third Foundation, one of my biggest goals has always been to use soccer as a bridge — a bridge that connects children from different backgrounds, cultures, and realities with new opportunities on and off the field.
I’ve had the privilege of witnessing this transformation firsthand, especially when I was able to help some of our Soccer & Literacy students transition into teams at Columbus East Football Club.
The first was Michael Banegas, from Northtowne School. The son of Honduran immigrants, Michael was very shy at first. But I saw something special in him. Three seasons later, he is a joyful and committed athlete and student, who has made friends, found confidence, and collected titles.
Then came others — Ruvym Harbuziuk, a Ukrainian forward with a keen eye for goal from Holt Crossing High School, and Jesus Martinez, a Mexican boy with dazzling dribbling skills. Together, they play for Columbus East Gabigol 2012, a team that has celebrated multiple championships.
We also welcomed players into Columbus East Titans 2014, including Tiago González, a passionate defender from Burroughs School — the very first school to implement Soccer & Literacy from Monday through Friday.
From Cassady School, I discovered Erikc Ramirez, a forward with a powerful shot. At Siebert, we met Johao Sebastian and Loubens Desruisseaux — from Honduras and Haiti respectively — both standout players and champions of the first Soccer and Futsal Leagues of CCS - Columbus City Schools, organized by Final Third Foundation in partnership with Nationwide.
Each of these children carries a story, a talent, and a dream. Watching them grow in confidence, form friendships, and discover a sense of belonging on the field has been a deeply moving experience.
I’m truly grateful to the Final Third Foundation for allowing me to live this purpose — to connect lives and communities through the universal language of soccer. When we provide real opportunities, the impact reaches far beyond the field. It transforms lives, strengthens communities, and inspires futures.
Thank you for everything, Soccer.
And thank you for everything, F3.
Warm regards,
