Carya ovata

Leaves
Similarly to maple syrup, this tree can be used to make a more smoky, earthy syrup used on pancakes and barbeque dishes
President Andrew Jackson had the nickname “Old Hickory” because of his resilience that some thought resembled the tough nature of hickory wood (which is used for crafting tool handles)
The name shagbark comes from the nature of the long, vertical bark strips that stem from this tree and uniquely provide habitat for various insects
