Leiah Groom-Thomas, Director of Education for F3, will take the lead on developing and expanding F3's Soccer & Literacy Branch, which includes our After-school and Summer programs as well as a Train the Trainer program. Leiah is in the final stages of receiving her PhD in Reading and Literacy in Early and Middle Childhood from The Ohio State University. Her research expertise includes young children’s literacy and comprehension skill development. Prior to pursuing her PhD, Leiah was a teacher at Grace Christian School in Blacklick, Ohio where she also assisted in organizing and operating various camp programs.
The objectives of the program are to foster a love for reading, generate enthusiasm for the game of soccer, and develop an understanding of teamwork and leadership.
Train the Trainer Program (TTP) The TTP prepares and empowers trainees from education and non-education backgrounds to facilitate child learning with interactive, high-quality literacy lessons. This step-by-step how-to guide on lesson preparation and implementation of the Born To Play curriculum aligns with U.S Common Core and College and Career Readiness standards necessary for eventual scale-up activities. The TTP also provides on-demand live sessions and remote on-demand resources that trainees can access online
F3’s Train the Trainer Program (TTP) kicked off on September 17th, 2020 in partnership with Pure Game, an LA-based nonprofit sports and development organization that is bringing the Jamie Johnson soccer and literacy program to many of its city’s schools. The initial 3.5-hour onboarding session was very successful. Coaches and trainees reported feeling more prepared to complete the program and indicated gaining knowledge about lesson planning, student engagement, and best practices when using a reading curriculum.
The next step is to provide ongoing support to Pure Game's Field Champions or Coaches/Trainers. This portion of the program has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. F3’s TTP will resume once Pure Game can provide in-person programming to LA schools.
The TTP not only gives future funders, grantees, sponsors, and donors confidence in the overall program; it also gives trainers the confidence to fully engage with their participants.
